Spreading joy within our local community

During our last week of term, teams Derwent, Foss and Humber initiated a community based project inspired by a book called Footpath Flowers by JonArno Lawson. The picture book tells the story of a young girl who sees beauty in things which are often dismissed by others and uses her kind heart to spread joy within her community. The children in Key Stage 2 were so excited by the idea that even small people and small gestures can transform the world, that they wanted to spread joy within their own community!
It was decided that each child would write a poem based on joy, kindness or community and illustrate forhealthylives.com this writing on a special postcard. Once the postcards were completed, each class went on a walk around Brotherton and Byram to post their creations to local residents.  All children were incredible ambassadors for the school and loved the ‘warm, fuzzy feeling’ after putting their poems through a letterbox! Along the way, KS2 also got to chat with some members of our community who all commented enthusiastically on the children’s great act of community kindness. We have received lots of positive messages from the recipients of our postcards. What a truly wonderful way to bring the year to a close!
