Welcome to Humber Class!

(Year 6)

humber

Teachers:

Mrs Christie (Teacher) and Miss Haselden (Assistant Teacher).

We are incredibly lucky as a school to have specialist teachers in PE,  Music and Spanish.

Welcome

Welcome to Team Humber!  We have an exciting year ahead when we will be exploring the world of the Ancient Greeks and discovering how their lives compared to ours today; finding out all about Italy, its geography, people, history and culture; and we will be learning all about healthy foods (including making and sampling our own creations!). In Science we will be exploring energy and the environment, learning about animals and humans and finding out all about evolution and inheritance.

We recognise that home and school form a crucial partnership in your child’s life, and we would encourage you to please come and speak with us if you have any questions or concerns.

Useful Information

Our learning begins straight away at 8:45am, so please ensure your child is  in school promptly and ready to learn.

Please can all children have a water bottle in school.  Everyone is welcome to bring in a piece of fruit to eat as a healthy snack during break-time.

Enrichment takes place on a Thursday from 3:15 – 4:15 pm.

Please can you make sure your child has their PE kit in school all week.  This can be kept in a named bag on their peg.

Homework

Our homework is designed to promote independent learning, so encouraging your child to take greater responsibility for their personal progress.  Children are encouraged to speak with an adult in class if they are struggling with any aspect of their homework.  Anyone who is struggling to complete their homework at home will be given the opportunity to complete it in school or at a homework club.  If you have any questions about homework, please feel free to come and speak with us.

Reading:  Children are asked to read with an adult for 20 minutes per day, five times a week.  This can be recorded in your child’s planner. Planners are checked daily and stamped.  Once a child has 5 stamps at the back of their planner, they receive a special prize from Mrs Fletcher’s treasure box.

Maths:  Children are asked to spend 10 minutes on their maths homework, four days per week.  The maths homework is given out on Mondays and is due in on Fridays.  Children will also benefit from practising their times tables regularly.  All children have a log-in for ‘TT rockstars’ which is a fun way to practise.

Spellings:  These are set weekly on Spelling Shed website/app.  If you don’t have access to the internet at home, please let us know and we will make alternative arrangements for learning the spellings.

Other homework may be set as and when necessary.

Spanish

In year 6 Spanish we consolidate our learning of the 5 key skills; listening, speaking, reading, writing and grammar. Children build their repertoire of questions and answers in conversations.  They learn how to describe the area in which they live, talk about what they like to do and conjugate verbs.
