Welcome to Team Calder!
(Year 5)

Team Calder are the Year 5 children at Brotherton and Byram CP School. Mrs Christie and Miss Healy-Bell are the class teachers. The children are incredibly lucky to have specialist teachers in PE, Arts & DT and Spanish during the week.

Our day begins with a maths task, focussing on basic skills and the four operations. This is followed by a ‘check in’, a very important part of our day where we can share how we’re feeling. We then have reading, focussing on comprehension skills, and then writing. After playtime we have our maths session.

In the afternoon the children have a handwriting session, focussing on spellings and patterns. Then there is another reading session which allows children to develop their stamina and fluency skills. The rest of the afternoon is spent on our creative curriculum, for example, History, Geography, Computing, RE, Art and Design and Technology.

Reading

Every day your child will bring their reading book and planner home. Please encourage your child to read every day, to a sibling, to you or to themselves, and please record this in their planner. Your child’s planner will be checked regularly and if your child reads five times in a week they will receive a stamp and when they get five stamps a special prize from Mrs Fletcher.

PE kit

Please ensure your child brings their PE kit to school on a Monday morning to leave at school throughout the week. They can then bring it home on a Friday.

Times tables

Please encourage your child to practice their times tables regularly at home. There are lots of ways you can do this. Your child has a log-in for ‘TT rockstars’ which is a great game for practicing times tables.

Spanish

Spanish is taught by a specialist Spanish teacher on Thursdays. In year 5 we focus on 4 key skills; listening, speaking, reading and writing. We also build our knowledge of Spanish phonics, vocabulary and grammar. We do this through lots of games, songs, stories, puzzles and creative tasks. We continue to reinforce Spanish letters and sounds and use this knowledge to help us read and write more complex words and longer sentences. We build our repertoire of questions and answers in conversations and talking about ourselves. We learn numbers to 100 and extend our vocabulary to include verbs, nouns and adjectives that help us describe sports and opinions, planets and their descriptions and clothing. We develop our understanding of Spanish grammar more by focussing on adjective agreement and simple verb conjugations as well as joining sentence with connectives.

We also have an eTwinning link with a school in Spain and collaborate on various projects and themes together for example sharing Christmas Cards or taking part in a video conference.
