Newsletter 9th May 2025

Friday 9th May 2025

This week we have been commemorating the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe Day, or VE Day. Eighty years ago, on the 8th of May 1945, the news that so many had longed for finally broke as the then Prime Minister, Winston Churchill, announced that the Second World War in Europe was over. Imagine the sheer relief, the outpouring of joy, the celebrations that erupted across our nation and beyond. It was a moment of profound significance, marking the end of years of hardship, sacrifice, and unimaginable bravery.

The children have been learning about VE day, as part of our History curriculum, and we had a special assembly to find out more about this important historical event. Yesterday, we were then pleased to invite members of the parish councils of Brotherton and Byram into school as we joined together in community to celebrate the freedoms that were won for us 80 years ago. As part of the event, Team Foss sang a song written to boost morale during the war called ‘We’re Going to Hang out the Washing on the Siegfried Line’. Also, children from Teams Derwent, Foss and Calder performed a special ‘tea dance’. Well done everyone – you were amazing!

This event wouldn’t have been possible without the hard work and dedication of a few key people. My sincere thanks go to Mrs Hand, Ms Gibb, and Mrs Robertson for their fantastic organisation in bringing this commemoration to life and also to Mrs Land and her team for making the food. We are also grateful to Mrs Everett and Miss Thompson for their work in preparing the song and the dance that pupils in Teams Derwent, Foss and Calder shared with us.

In other news, please can I remind all parents and carers to drive and park with care and consideration at the front of school to ensure that everyone is kept safe. Please do not park on the yellow lines, unless you have a blue badge, and please do not park on the yellow zig-zag lines.

Have a lovely weekend and see you next week, Mr Greene
