Newsletter 26th June 2026

Friday 26th June 2026

Wow – what a warm week it has been! Thank you for your support this week as we have worked together in partnership, following DfE guidelines, to ensure children were as comfortable and safe as possible. A huge thank you as well to our pupils for being so sensible and calm this week, as well as our staff team for looking after the children so well. Thankfully, the weather looks to cool down a bit as we go into next week!

Whilst we have taken sensible steps to adapt the curriculum and reduce physical activity this week, it has not stopped our children working really hard and enjoying their learning! It has been wonderful to see all the excellent work across school this week with our focus on Diversity. We began with an assembly on Monday morning where we introduced the topic of diversity. We talked to the children about them all being unique and special. We then discussed what makes us unique and the importance of celebrating our differences, as these make us stronger in our learning community. Throughout the week, children have been finding out more and enjoying these discussions within their PSHE lessons. We finished the week today with a non-uniform day inviting children to come into school wearing some clothing that represents their uniqueness. Thank you for your ongoing support with this! Thank you Mrs Jeff for organising this!

This week, as part of their topic on the Vikings, the pupils in Year 5 had a fantastic trip over to Wakefield Museum (with air conditioning)! On arrival they were greeted by Kelldergard, their Viking host for part of the morning. They all chose a Viking name and explored maps looking for Viking settlements. Lots of Viking settlements ended in thorpe, thwaite or by like Whitby. Can you think of any closer settlements that might have Viking names? They took it in turns to investigate the original Viking log boat and explore some replica Viking artifacts to make a conclusion as to whether Kelldergard had a prosperous life. Once Kelldergard had departed, they explored the children’s library and enjoyed a book in the various reading areas on offer. After lunch they investigated the museum where the children could get hands on with some of the original artifacts on display. They also enjoyed role playing and dressing up in the 1950’s / 1960’s kitchen area. All the children were an absolute credit to the school and we are very grateful to Mrs Caffrey, Miss Reeder, Mrs Hand and Mrs Haselden-Atkins for making the trip possible! REMEMBER if your child has a library card for Pontefract Library they can use all the facilities at Wakefield One whenever they are open.

Finally, we hope to see parents and carers on Monday afternoon at 14:00 for the Year 5 and Year 6 performance next week if you can make it! Also, parents of children in Year 6, please remember that the children have their transition tasters days at secondary school. Finally, if your child is in Year 1 or 2, don’t forget that they are taking part in their school trip to the seaside next Friday! In the meantime, have a wonderful weekend!

Thank you for your continued support, Mr Greene

National Children’s Orchestras Auditions 2027

We are delighted to announce that auditions for NCO 2027 are now open! We’re hoping that some of the young musicians in your area would like to be a part of NCO Membership next year and we would be very grateful for your help spreading the word. To find out more, visit our website: Auditioning for NCO | The National Children’s Orchestras of Great Britain.

Auditions close at 9am on Friday 31st July 2026.

To help you spread the word, please find attached a poster that you are welcome to share digitally, or print and display and a Key Info doc for a snapshot of the annual programme with videos. You can also share our social posts on Instagram, Facebook and LinkedIn.

Those interested can also find out more at our auditions webinar on Sunday 31st May at 3p.m., where members of the NCO team will talk through the process and answer any questions. Register interest in attending here: https://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_pfd5W1f3TpKvy4McYJKjWg

Our aim is that money doesn’t create a barrier to a child hoping to take part in our activities. We want any young musician, no matter their background or circumstance, to have the opportunity to accept their offer of a place in NCO. It is possible to have all or part of the fees paid for by our Financial Support programme.

Thank you in advance for your help encouraging more young musicians to experience the joy of orchestral music making! If you have any questions about the process or sharing this information, please email auditions@nco.org.uk with any questions you may have.

Play together. Be unstoppable.
