Brotherton and Byram Children’s Choir at Young Voices Sheffield 2024!

This week we had the pleasure of taking the BB Young Voices choir to perform at Sheffield Area and we are delighted to say that they absolutely smashed it! We are extremely proud of the whole team for their hard work and courage; they put on an amazing show and had a great time! Take a look at our page on X for photos and videos of the event. The event is open to children in Key Stage 2 and I hope lots of children will participate again next year. I would like to thank Miss Dickinson, Miss Catterall and Miss Johnson for supporting the trip and coming along to help. Events like this take a huge amount of preparation, practise and organisation. Therefore, I would also like to pass on a HUGE thanks to Mrs Caffrey for her role in leading the school choir and organising the event!

In other news, on Monday 19th February to start our ‘Diversity Week’ with the theme of ‘Additional Needs’, Brotherton and Byram were visited by Jono Lancaster. Jono has a condition called Treacher Collins Syndrome. Jono delivered an assembly to the whole school and spoke about his story, sharing with the children about how he had been called names, bullied, stared at, pointed at and been left out. Jono’s message to the children was clear; that we are all different but we should treat each other with respect and kindness. Jono spent the day with classes, allowing children to ask questions and talk to him about his condition.

On his Instagram account (@jonolanc) Jono shared a video of his visit to our school with his 300,000 followers which had a really positive impact on him. He also shared another story that when he showed his hearing aid, one of our pupils who also wears a hearing aid, was very excited that they both had one! The children at have also had a visit from Go Kids Go! Go Kids Go is a specialist charity who provide training and advice to young wheelchair users and their families as well as working with non-users to raise awareness of the challenges faced by those in wheelchairs. The children loved the event. Thank you to Mrs Jeff and Mrs Christie for all their hard work to organise such a fantastic week of learning and visitors.

Have a lovely weekend and see you next week, Mr Greene

Safeguarding Thought of the Week

We have been made aware of a concern regarding a National WhatsApp group.  A different school has been alerted by parents  to a WhatsApp group their children are being added to, that currently has 800+ members. The concern is the content within the group such as pornographic images and GIFS, racist, homophobic, derogatory and sexually explicit language. If your child has access to WhatsApp, please be aware that they could be exposed to this and other concerning issues. Please ensure appropriate monitoring of their electronic devices.

This week we have shared information with you regarding the social media and messaging platform Snap. We are aware that many children use this app. Please read through the attached information that highlights the risks involved.

SCHOOL LUNCH MENU

On Thursday 7th March we will be celebrating World Book Day at Brotherton and Byram. We are very excited to celebrate all things books and share our favourite stories with one another. We will be welcoming Sarah Shafi, author of the Ridiculous Witches series, to our school for the day: she will be reading her books, answering questions and running workshops for our classes. As well as this, we ask that all children bring their favourite book to school with them to showcase. Finally, we will be having a non-school uniform day and we encourage you to dress as your favourite book character or author! A competition will be held across Foundation, KS1 and KS2 for best costume for those who enter with an exciting book themed prize up for grabs!
